Floyd is a tennis prodigy being groomed to be the youngest person to go to Wimbledon. He has loving supportive parents who have devoted their lives to training Floyd and making his dreams come true. But what if being a tennis star is not Floyd’s dream?
Floyd doesn’t see this as a possibility until a strange man starts appearing at his tennis matches. Floyd just thinks the man is a fan until the man steps onto the court during a match and no one does anything about it. Floyd realizes at this point that he is the only one that can see this mysterious man, who has introduced himself as Mike. The story dives right into Floyd’s therapy sessions to figure out the purpose of Mike and why Floyd is having visions of him. Mike is discovered to be a projection of Floyd’s inner being and he is trying to tell Floyd something. As the reader, you get to follow Floyd as he figures out what he really wants in life, even if that doesn’t include tennis and his family’s dreams for Wimbledon.
This book was gripping, fast paced and compelling. It made me really think about choices we make in life and where they lead us. Sometimes, if we listen to those who know us best, we might find our path changing ever slightly towards something completely different but just as great!
Mike by Andrew Norriss is realistic fiction. The story leads readers on a journey with Floyd and it has a very satisfying ending that will make you feel as if you know the character and are cheering for him to succeed.
