While technically not a “teen” book my teenage daughters and I all greatly enjoyed reading “A Fool and His Monet” by Sandra Orchard. It is the first book in the Serena Jones Mystery trilogy and it was so good that we’ve all started reading (fighting over who is going to get to read) the next books in the series. Our solution has been to read the second book out loud so that nobody has to wait her turn. Of course that didn’t stop my oldest from reading ahead and now she is finishing up the third book and can’t wait to talk about it! With COVID-19 keeping us all at home it has been fun enjoying the mysteries together as a family.
“A Fool and His Monet” follows FBI Special Agent Serena Jones as she solves art crime cases. She is passionate about art and crime fighting, in large part because of the unsolved murder of her grandfather and the theft of one of his paintings. The mystery is exciting, twisty, and perfectly paced. We had a lot of fun theorizing whodunit and why as the book went along. There are also moments of humor and a light romantic love triangle, as Serena starts to sort out who is just a great friend and who might become something more.
If you like a good mystery without too much gore, plenty of fun supporting characters, and a plucky protagonist to root for, then this series is for you.
